Too Cute Tuesday: Laundry Detergent

Every Tuesday, it’s a cheap craft, fun cocktail, and good friends. To learn more, check out Facebook or see all the Too Cute Tuesday posts at www.toocutetuesday.com.

This week at Too Cute Tuesday, a lot of our usual suspects were off on school vacation so it was just Sue and I tonight, holding down the crafting fort.

A while back, my Fort Kent friend/fellow blogger Kellie sent me a link to some cheap and easy homemade laundry detergent she made. When I realized how many jugs of plastic (not to mention dollars) this would save over time, I realized it was a perfect craft for Earth month. This April, we’re doing all Earth-friendly crafts this month.

I halved Kellie’s recipe since it was just Sue and I taking home the booty…but one penny per load of laundry?! That’s amazing, and so easy!

Materials
1/6 bar of Felds-Napta
1/4 cup Borax
1/4 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda

Cocktail of the Night: Dirty Underwear
1 oz vodka, 1 oz peach schnapps, several drops grenadine. To make a cocktail, fill with lemonade.

1. Head to the grocery store cleaning aisle to find needed crafting supplies. Just as you’re about to give up, notice the Borax and washing soda on the top shelf at the end of the aisle, and the Felds- Napta bars behind a display. Clearly, these aren’t the grocery store’s money making items!

Too Cute Tuesday: Can Camping Stove

Too Cute Tuesday is a weekly event involving a craft, a cocktail, and friends. To join the fun, visit our Facebook page or see all the TCT posts in one location here.

I was at a party a couple months ago when my friend Joe told me he could make a camping stove out of two cans and a utility knife. I of course made him do it on the spot. What a perfect craft for Too Cute Tuesday and a great way to recycle a couple of cans! (Remember, we are trying to make all our crafts earth friendly since Earth Day is this month.)

Since I apparently don’t drink anything out of cans, I had to buy some beverage, in my case generic store brand diet coke, so I could craft. Rum, cola, knives, and fire? We have a fun and potentially dangerous night on our hands.

Materials
2 cans
Utility knife
Scissors
Nail or thumbtack and hammer
Liquid fuel and lighter

Safety stuff: Fire extinguisher, Place to burn safely, trained firefighter (optional)

Cocktail of the Night: Rum and Coke (might as well use the Coke, right?)

Sue and I tried to follow the instructions and make 32 holes around the outside of our can. We gave up after about half that because pushing the thumbtack through the can was actually kind of hard on our hands!

For those of you wanting really exact directions, Instructables has a very specific tutorial. As you know, here at TCT, we like to make it simpler if we can (which means sometimes it doesn’t work… but then sometimes, it does!)

1. Pour cocktail right away, since you need two empty cans to attempt.

2. Poke holes around the bottom of one can, and a few in the middle. This is where the fuel will get poured in and where it’ll burn off.

My camping stove worked well (gasp). I know, I'm as shocked as you are.

3. Cut the holey can so only the bottom and about 1 inch of the body of the can remain. Cut the bottom off the other can the same way. You’re going to fit the two pieces together eventually.

Too Cute Tuesday: DIY Shaving Cream

Every Tuesday, it’s a craft, a cocktail, and friends. Because DIY is fun and you don’t have to be Martha Stewart to make something cool. For more fun, check it out on Facebook or see all the Too Cute Tuesday posts at www.toocutetuesday.com.

April is my favorite month. National Poetry Month, my birthday, and Earth Day all happen. Also my world gets less muddy outside and I can start wearing sandals.

This month we salute Mother Earth with environmentally related crafts. This week, we made our own shaving cream, inspired by a combination of eHow and Planet Green. Chef Dan showed us and made hot lemonade to spice things up. Yay Tuesday!

Materials:
1/4 bar of soap (2 inches x 1 inch x 1 inch)
1/2 c. water
double boiler situation
1 tbsp. glycerin (It naturally comes in liquid form… which I didn’t know before this evening)
a few drops essential oil (optional- we used lime)
mug

Cocktail of the Night
Hot Lemonade: Combine juice from one large lemon, 1-2 oz. maple syrup, 1 tbsp granulated or brown sugar, 1 oz dark rum. Fill with hot water.

Chef Dan shakes things up. If you have a hot kitchen, might as well make a warm cocktail!

1. Read article in Planet Green about melting glycerin and adding oil to create shaving cream. Think it’s easy.

2. Go to your local hippie-dippy store to pick up glycerin. Realize you can only find liquid glycerin. Hmmm.

Too Cute Tuesday: Salt Water Taffy

Too Cute Tuesday is a weekly event involving a craft, a cocktail, and friends. To learn more check us out on Facebook or see the TCT posts at www.toocutetuesday.com.
This past Sunday was Maine Maple Sunday and while sap production is lower this year than was expected (something to do with the relatively warmer weather we’ve been having), we are not letting that get us down at Too Cute Tuesday!
We decided to make maple flavored salt water taffy because it was easy and it involved sugar, two factors we often consider with crafting.
Armed with buttery scissors, I am up to evil candy cutting.

Dorrie deals with our mass of taffy, with buttered hands and a tolerance for heat. Now that's taking one for the team!

Ingredients:
2 cups white granulated sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons butter
1-1/2 cups water
1/4 teaspoon flavored oil
7 drops food coloring
maple syrup or other flavoring
food coloring (optional- we didn’t use it)
candy thermometer
sauce pan
cookie sheet
plastic wrap or wax paper
scissors
extra butter
Cocktail of the Night: Triple Phat Limeaid (two parts lime juice, 1 oz citrus vodka, 1 oz cognac, 1 oz orange liqueur. Shake and pour.)
If you need more detailed directions, check out eHow. Otherwise, we’ll take you through our process below:
1. Gather sugar, syrup, salt, and water. Dump in saucepan. Heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Heat mixture slowly to 260ish degrees F. (Mental note: You might want to actually get a candy thermometer to do this. Ours only went up to 220. D’oh!) Candy will be at the hard ball stage, which means you can put a bit of mixture in a cup of cold water and it makes , you guessed it, a hard ball. Stir in maple syrup (or any flavor and coloring you are using).

Too Cute Tuesday: Parachute Toys

Too Cute Tuesday involves a craft, a cocktail, and friends. It’s different every week which means no one is the crafting star and we always get to try something new. To see more posts, check out www.toocutetuesday.com (it’s just a link the ‘too cute tuesday’ posts on this blog) or check out www.facebook.com/toocutetuesday.

Here at Too Cute Tuesday, we look for inspiration everywhere. When I saw this on the Readymade website, I thought it looked fun and relatively simple, not to mention gave a way to use not-so-rockin scarves in a second life.

Add some friends, ditch the sewing machine, and you’ve got yourself a fairly relaxing evening… well, until the last step anyway.

Materials
Silk scarves (think the old granny kind) or fabric
Plain white fabric
Markers
Needle and thread
Poly-fil
Scissors
Washers or pieces of miscellaneous hardware that’ll add weight to your parachute dude/lady

Cocktail of the Night: Modified Dogsled (2 oz. whiskey, 1 tsp grenadine, 1 tbsp. lemon/lime juice mixture, fill with lemonade)

Dan Dan the Lobsterman sews for the second time in his life. Even a star chef/master of the high seas is clueless on attaching the parachute guy/gal to the parachute.

Note: If you want actually detailed, useful directions, check out the original post here.

1. Attempt to print pdf of the instructions only to find your printer needs new cartridges. Try to fool your printer by taking out your existing cartridges and just sticking them back in. Apparently your printer is too smart for this. We’re reading off the screen tonight I guess!

Too Cute Tuesday: Cream Puffs

Sometimes, you have to change plans at the last minute. TCT will resume it’s regularly scheduled program next week but this week, we’re giving one of our own a little TLC and taking the day off. Jodi, a TCT fan who has her own blog Living the Road Less Traveled, was kind enough to share her cream puff triumph as a guest post.

If you are looking for a cocktail, may I suggest a pre-Saint Patty’s Day treat of green beer? Just sayin…

This is a recipe I’ve had sitting in my box for quite some time. It originally comes from my Great Aunt Violet.

Bring 1/2 cup of water to boiling point and add 1/4 cup shortening; stir until melted. Bring back to boiling point and quickly add 1/2 cup flour and 1/4 tsp salt; cook, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes or until mixture forms small, smooth balls.

Cool slightly. Add 2 eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each. Beat for 5 minutes until mix is thick.

Jodi's cream puff batter in action. I am almost motivated to finally buy a mixer instead of borrowing one all the time...

Shape dough into balls and place 2″ apart on a greased baking sheet (parchment paper would also work). Bake at 450 for 10 minutes; reduce heat to 350 and bake another 20-25 minutes.
