My Free Nightly Ritual

Something I’ve started doing in the last month has been really helpful, and hasn’t cost me a cent.

Every night around 9 pm, I go for a walk.

Sometimes I stop by a friend’s house and see if she wants to go with me, sometimes I go by myself. I may change out of my work clothes or check my email first but most every night, even when I’m tired, Sadie and I take a walk downtown.

This Week In Business: Lights Camera Action

There certainly is no substitute for good press. After a favorable article in MaineBiz, people have been calling, emailing, and Facebooking me. In particular, inquiries have increased. For this, I am grateful! Here’s what else has been going on.

I started filming the video that’ll be on my site.
Two interviewers with local business owners down, three to go. I spent this morning trying to extract the video from yesterday’s interviews off the camera only to find that I do no have a firewire port, which I may need. At times like this, I miss my old job for the technical support or even just having someone else to whine about this with. (If you live locally, I’ll pay you to come over to my house and figure it out. Seriously!)

Too Cute Tuesday: Six By Six Art

I was having breakfast with one of my Vinalhaven friends this past weekend. She is helping run the non-profit daycare on the island and they have an upcoming art auction. The format is 6″ by 6″ art pieces, anything goes. She made some mention on how they may not have enough art.

Enter Too Cute Tuesday, where we have more artists and creative energy then anyone can shake a stick at (you know, whatever that expression means!). Plus, how hard can it be to cover a 6″ by 6″ piece of board anyway?

Sarah fearlessly weilds an exacto knife and mixes media.

How To Deal When Your Insurance Company Ignores You

The following is a timeline of my Aetna insurance claim, which began on March 31 and concluded today. What a pain! Guess that’s what I get for trying to make a journey towards better mental health…

If I was actually crazy, I could have had the energy to deal with my insurance company. Here’s my saga, and why you need to advocate for yourself at all times.

My First Billionaire

This weekend, I was out to lunch with some friends of mine (T and B), who happen to be a couple around my parents’ age. The three of us were at a casual little restaurant in Downeast Maine. Think $6 sandwiches with chips and a pickle and baked goods the size of your head.

At the next table over, my friends recognized a local billionaire. Nope, not million, billion. He was wearing some non-descript clothes: boat shoes, light wash jeans, and a polo shirt. He had a baseball cap and kind of slouched. He looked like a regular dude.

T smirked. He had a previous, eye rolling interaction with Mr. Billionaire.

Why I Am Taking A Break From Online Dating

I wrote this over two weeks ago and debated posting it because it is a little personal. But I think maybe it might be helpful for other people to read, as I found it really helpful for me to write.

When I was growing up, the most important quality a person could have was to be hardworking. This trait has translated well for me in school, in my career, in living within a budget, and has in general helped me attain a lot of what I want in life.

The one place where this trait has not served me well is in my love life. I think part of me, up until very recently, has thought that if I worked hard enough to get and then maintain a relationship with a good man that I would find ‘the one’, and maybe some additional happiness.

This Week In Business: Cyber Siren

I spent most of this week finishing a really big project. It’s always interesting how you can be in the middle of something big and wonder if you are ever going to finish. Then, when the due day comes, it somehow seems to come together. Here’s this week at Breaking Even Communications:

The MaineBiz article about me appeared…and I was a ‘cyber siren’!
John (my former boyfriend now friend who had written the initial press release) told me I should be ready for any angle the press wanted to use in the story. He told me I shouldn’t be above using my youth, good looks, being formerly in the newspaper industry, having a family who owns a small business, or other details about my life that the writer may want to expound on.

Too Cute Tuesday: Seaglass Jewelry

For the second week in a row, my craft actually came out reasonably well. How happy am I!

This Too Cute Tuesday started off pretty stressful but it further proved of the power of crafting, good friends, and a bottle of Syrah.

Right before we were scheduled to head to Craft Central, Sadie decided to break out of the apartment while I was in the shower. I realized my mistake after a few quiet moments.

I put on clothes and walked the street with dog treats in my pocket and dripping hair, showing strangers Sadie’s picture. No one had seen her. I returned home after ten minutes and decided to call the police department.

“White and tan dog?”
“Yup.”
“Burn on her tail?”
“Yup.”
“Well one of the officers tried to pick her up…”

Oh crap. Sadie hates to be picked up. So, Sadie bit a police officer. Fan- freakin-tastic.

Would You Take A Pay Cut For A Stress Cut?

Recently I did the math and have found my weekly income has dropped about 20% from what it was when I was working full time at the newspaper and part time on my internet marketing business. (To refresh, I am now working full time at my internet marketing business full and part time at an inn.)

But here’s what my life looks like at my part time job:

Feet up on a wicker chair overlooking the ocean. Yup, my part time gig is hard.
